Coral Reef

In 2020, Quiltworx.com designed its sixth “Technique of the Month” pattern. The Coral Reef Pattern brings together a wide-range of techniques for Foundation Paper Piecing, leaving students with the ability to move on to many other Quiltworx patterns once they have completed this design. Because of Judy’s dedication to teaching, she has also gone through the steps to provide training for our Certified Shops and Instructors so they can provide training to their students and customers in-house or online as a monthly or weekly program that includes consecutive workshops ranging from 6 to 8 classes, depending on the class structure. These classes will help you understand the process and steps needed to complete the pattern.
The Coral Reef includes many of Judy’s techniques for paper piecing, including cutting, stacking, chain piecing, curved piecing, strip piecing, smart corners, appliqué, the use of Transition and Registration Point (TRP) Lines, and curved paper piecing.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: All Skill Levels welcome
Requirements: ▪ Quiltworx Pattern Coral Reef (pattern includes all printed foundation papers and applique shapes needed to complete the project. ▪ Fabric requirements as listed in the pattern. Please ensure all fabric is labelled according to the pattern. ▪ Sewing Machine and normal sewing supplies (incl. small scissors, seam ripper, and a quarter inch foot if you have it) ▪ Sewing Machine Needles: Size #70 (recommended for foundation sewing and piecing) or needle suitable for your machine. ▪ Machine Thread ? 50wt thread is recommended for strength and seam accuracy for all paper foundation sewing and piecing. ▪ Quilters Ruler 61⁄2? x 14? for cutting fabrics and foundation papers, or other similar ruler ▪ Add-a-quarter ruler ? 6 inch and a 12 inch. Designed specifically for paper foundation with a quarter-inch lip on bottom side. ▪ Template plastic cut a piece 3? x 7? and a piece 3? x 13?. These will be used to fold back foundation papers before trimming with the add-a-quarter rulers. ▪ Paper Clips - 50mm size (preferable) 1 box ▪ Plastic ziplock bags ? Quantities are listed in each booklet. (I recommend the ?large/jumbo? ziplock bags available from the supermarket: Glad or Hercules brand), the small ?sandwich bags? are not suitable. Please have a large ziplock bag available to put your fabric scraps in. ▪ Glue stick (Sewline or similar) refills available for purchase in-store. Preferably not UHU glue please ▪ Roller Glue Tape? see picture below. ?Renoir?(available to purchase from Maureen) or any other similar glue tape. ▪ Pins ? Flowerhead for template pinning. Round glass head for piecing ▪ Marking pen - please have colour(s) that show on your fabrics - not a permanent marking pen, or an iron-off pen ▪Rotary Cutter - Please ensure your blade is relatively new/sharp and that you have a spare blade on hand; replacement blades are available for purchase in-store. If you start with a dull blade you will struggle to get a clean even cut. Note:** the ?Pressure Sensitive? rotary cutter that only releases the blade when you press on it is not ideal for these projects. You need the cutting blade to be exposed at all times to assist with free motion cutting and precision trimming, especially around the templates, fabric and foundations papers. Cutting Mat: A medium size (18?x24? or similar). You will need your mat to sit beside your machine to use for trimming the fabrics. Due to limited availability of cutting mats in store, you will need to bring your own. A round rotating mat is not recommended. PREPARATION PRIOR TO CLASS To save time in class you will be required to complete the following before the first class please. CORRECTIONS TO PATTERN Before you start any Quiltworx pattern you should ALWAYS check to see if there are any corrections to your pattern. 1. Go to the website www.quiltworx.com 2. HOVER over PRODUCTS tab 3. Click on CORRECTIONS from the drop down menu 4. Scroll down until you get to Coral Reef 5. Here you will find the corrections to this pattern. Click on each one at a time and with your Booklets in front of you go to the Booklet and page number as directed in the on-screen correction and check to see if the correction is needed in your Booklet. Please write the necessary changes by hand in your Booklets, there is no need to print out the corrections. IMPORTANT: there are changes to this pattern, so please take the time to make the corrections. APPLIQU? REQUIREMENTS The following notions will be needed ▪ 2 x Ziploc bags - one to hold your applique circle shapes when you?ve covered them and one for the applique fabric. ▪ Appliqu? Thread ? choose a colour to blend with your appliqu? fabric - (silk or cotton thread) A 60wt or 50wt thread is preferable for the applique. ▪ Machine sewing Needle: Size #60 (recommended for machine appliqu? if using a 60wt thread or silk machine thread) ▪ Self-threading hand sewing needle to take appliqu? thread to the back of the quilt. (Optional ? available to purchase from Maureen) ▪ Purple Thang - for folding/pressing fabric to the circle appliqu? shape see picture below ▪ Glue Stick ? already required in the standard requirements above, and also needed for appliqu? ▪ Roxanne Glue Baste it - See picture below I recommend any of the Roxanne glue that comes in a bottle? it?s easier to dispense and control. The ?Dip and Dab? applicator is not recommended for this purpose. (Available to purchase from Maureen) ▪ Fabric Scissors to cut applique fabric - It will be your choice what scissors you use. I recommend you experiment by cutting some circles with the scissors you plan to use for your applique before the May class so you can get a feel of what works for you. I used the 6? aqua coloured handle ?Karen Kay Buckley? scissors. They have a combination of one fine serrated blade and one normal blade. The blades grip and pull the fabric into the scissors when cutting. They really do the job of cutting fabric shapes with ease.
